Internal speakers with no audio - HP Elitebook 8 G1i, Intel Core Ultra7 258V Lunar Lake

The laptop is new, purchased direct from HP one week ago. Speakers pass all BIOS hardware testing including speaker audio tests.

This is a current model HP Elitebook 8 G1i running HP BIOS version X91-01.02.04 / 2.3.8.0.
CPU: Intel Core Ultra7 258V Lunar Lake

The problem affects various Ubuntu / Debian-based linux distros such as Linux Mint; also some non Debian distros such as Manjaro / Arch and Fedora (rawhide).

Audio works perfectly through the headphones jack or via USB audio -- just not from the laptop speakers.

I updated Linux Mint 22.2 to 22.3 today and the audio issue remains. LinuxMint Forums helpers suggested this issue may require drivers from Hewlett Packard, however they were not encouraging about HP's likely participation.

@KathyMorocco, thank you for the logs. From SOF audio stack point of view there is no difference to playing audio to headphones or to speaker, there might be issue with how the ALSA mixer controls are configured (or not configured for that matter).
In kernel I see that this machine have a quirk to get the mic-mute LED working and nothing else, which suggests that it 'should' work:

The machine have Realtek ALC245 codec with 2 sideamp from Cirrus (CSC3556).

There are few things you can check.
You confirm that the issue remains when using the legacy HDA stack with:

options snd_intel_dspcfg dsp_driver=1

added to /etc/modprobe.d/force-legacy.conf (sudo nano /etc/modprobe.d/force-legacy.conf) and reboot the machine, you will loose the on device mic, but you can check if the speaker works any better. If it does, please capture the alsa-info.sh to see the differences.

If not, open a terminal window, run alsamixer -c0 (you might run this with sudo) and while playing audio make changes to mixer controls and see if you can make the speakers to produce audio. If you did, mark the mixer that fixes the issue, remove the /etc/modprobe.d/force-legacy.conf, reboot and open a terminal and change the mixer you have changed while you were using the legacy stack.

Thank you for your suggestions, and for taking the time to dig through my log files.

Switching to the legacy HDA stack did indeed make my Digital Microphone sdf-hda-dsp device vanish from the input list in the Linux Sound panel. Doing so did not change the observable behavior of audio output, however. In legacy HDA mode, the headphones audio works but the laptop speakers still do not generate any sound. I could not find any AlsaMixer slider changes that made the laptop speakers work... details provided in the next two paragraphs to describe what I am seeing to the best of my ability.

As you know, pressing Fn-F6 and choosing the first option, the default sound card, only brings up only a single volume slider. Pressing Fn-F6 again and choosing the second option "default:0 HDA Intel PCH" restores the several volume sliders as seen when I first ran alsamixer per your instructions, "alsamixer -c0", ie: Master, Headphone, Speaker, PCM, Mic Boost, S/PDIF (0,1,23), and Auto-Mute Mode. I do not have S/PDIF optical in this laptop, so I cannot change those settings. Changing Auto-Mute Mode on/off does not make any perceptible difference. Moving each of the volume sliders up and down does not yield any sound from the speakers. Adding the L-R Capture slider by pressing Fn-F5 also does not produce happy results.

Curiously, plugging in my headphones into the laptop's 3.5 mm jack makes the Headphone volume slider go to 100% and the Speaker volume go to 0%. Unplugging the headphones makes the Speaker volume go to 100% and the Headphones volume go to 0%. So Linux libraries are recognizing and switching the output target; but no sound comes out of the laptop speakers.

I deleted the /etc/modprobe.d/force-legacy.conf file as you suggested and I rebooted my laptop. The Digital Microphone is now back in the Linux Sound panel, but there is still no sound from the laptop speakers.

This laptop passes HP's audio hardware tests in the BIOS. It produces sound from the speakers during BIOS testing, but not when booted in Linux Mint nor other Linux distros I tried briefly. I do not have the immediate ability to boot into Windows OS at this time to test the speakers. (Sorry, my Windows 11 oem SSD has gone missing.)

Looking at the amount of effort you invested with my laptop, it maybe best to forget about the speakers and use the 3.5 mm jack or USB audio, both of which work perfectly. It is a fantastic laptop in every other way. I will not run Windows OS for privacy reasons, so this is a small trade-off.

Perhaps other Elitebook owners may benefit from this discussion, not to waste time on a hopeless search?

@KathyMorocco, thank you for the test you have done, it confirms that the HDA codec/side amp configuration is not correct (legacy HDA have the same issue).
Looking at duckduckgo results and you are not alone with issues on similar HP laptops :(
Can you try this, if helps
Create /etc/modprobe.d/alc245.conf
with content:

and reboot and then upload a new alsa-info.sh output.
