The default value should be around 8k.

You can check by

sysctl -n fs.inotify.max_user_watches

So 256k or 512k would be better to avoid unexpected error

128k would be better. it would consume memory. and it should be enough because it's x16 times of default.

it would be the project is missing some option so watching excessively

Using excessively many max_user_watches should be used one-off
