No where does it CLEARLY state that we needed a license for API access in a self-hosted environment and when I finally was able to get this software up and running, I discovered there did not appear to be api access. In my quick search, it was mentioned that a paid license was needed for this functionality, even in self-hosted environment. If I knew that, I would have just used a different platform and saved myself the huge hassle of installing this. But, maybe that is the point of burying this somewhere, instead of making sure people know this is the case, by the time they find out perhaps you think they will just stick with it and pay after going through the trouble. Maybe just be up front about it and put a blurb in the README, or in the docker-compose file. I have used a LOT of open source software, being that I work for a K-8 school district with an extremely tight budget. There are always a couple of hoops and some hiccups involved, but this software has been just about the most difficult software I have ever setup, even though it should be very easy using docker. And then to find out it was all for nothing is infuriating. If I have to pay, there are better platforms for the same cost or even less.
